Within the Wuqi Social Housing community, the residents’ Line group is more than a channel for daily exchanges of information; it has become a platform where second-hand items circulate as acts of gifting. Here, fleeting text messages replace spoken conversations, creating a paradoxical atmosphere—at once noisy and quiet. These transactions, however, are never driven by profit, but by reciprocity and a spirit of mutual care. The exchanges unfold swiftly and efficiently, yet often one party remains absent in the physical space, leaving only the object itself—quietly placed or retrieved—as the sole witness of the encounter.
Across time, the transfer of goods has always required an intermediary point, though its form has varied. For the residents of Wuqi, that intermediary is nothing more than the plain plastic table in the management office. This table has silently borne the weight of countless exchanges, though none have ever been recorded—traces that exist, yet remain invisible.
This work draws inspiration from both the residents’ acts of sharing and this modest table, transforming them into an installation that is at once a “relay station” and a “recording station.” In each transaction, participants imprint a custom two-part receipt book using stamps drawn from the installation. The abstract motifs inscribed upon these stamps compose a symbolic vocabulary unique to Wuqi Social Housing: while they hold a standard meaning, their interpretation shifts with orientation, allowing for both personal and collective readings. As the ink seeps into the second layer of the receipt, kept within the community archive, the residents’ gestures of generosity are transfigured into tangible marks—preserving the warmth and spirit of sharing as an enduring memory of this place.
